Zo! And Tall Black Guy bring us along for "The Ride"
One of the busiest musicians in the game right now is Detroit-born, DMV based Lorenzo Ferguson aka Zo! If he's not on stage with the supergroup The Foreign Exchange, he may be scoring documentaries or curating his own (see 2017's Skybreak) or possibly creating the soundtrack for the IFC series Sherman's Showcase or squeezing in time to work on his own projects. After the success of his 2019 album FourFront, he's back with his newest release Abstractions, which is a collaborative album featuring Tall Black Guy, and a single entitled The Ride," which features some familiar faces.
On this mid-tempo groove that dripping with some G-Funk vibes courtesy of Zo! And Tall Black Guy's production, "The Ride" features Sy Smith on vocals, as she's encouraging us all on the chorus to "sit back and enjoy the ride." The twist is that while most of Zo!'s compositions lean into the R&B and Soul genres, there's a heavy dose of hip-hop as fellow Detroit MCs Black Milk and Elzhi spit bars showing love to the Motor City and the things that make it unique. Their description of Detroit's flair fits the track very well, and the layer of The Talkbox complimenting the hook and the flow makes this song an immediate contender for a summertime smash and a banger for your car or your party.
Zo! And Tall Black Guy have a hit on their hands, and after hearing "The Ride" you will want to make you take more musical trips with them.
