Sharon Rae North is an artist who uses music to tell heartfelt stories. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, her life has taken her across many cities. Before focusing fully on music, she built a successful career in journalism, working as a TV reporter and anchor, then later as a newswriter at CNN and WSB in Atlanta. Today, she lives in Northern Virginia, where she continues her musical journey.

Sharon Rae North does not limit herself to one specific genre. She loves music across many styles, but if she had to choose, jazz would be her closest match, especially vocal jazz and classic standards. She is drawn to the timeless beauty of those early voices and lyrics. The singers from that era simply sang with honesty and grace, and their voices continue to inspire awe. Her musical influences are artists known for rich, resonant voices and emotional storytelling. Legends such as Nancy Wilson, Etta James, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nat King Cole greatly influence her sound. She also draws inspiration from contemporary artists including Oleta Adams, Lalah Hathaway, Randy Crawford, Tony Terry, and Luther Vandross. Their ability to convey feelings through music is something she deeply values.

Her new single, “Drive,” is set for release in January. The song is a cover of the iconic 1980s hit by The Cars. Sharon was drawn to the emotional depth of the song and its story of someone trying to save another person from their inner struggles. Working with producer Chris “Big Dog” Davis, she helped create a smooth, updated arrangement that stays true to the heart of the original. The idea to record “Drive” came naturally. Sharon heard the song on Sirius XM while driving and immediately felt connected to it. She reached out to Chris with the idea, and once the music was arranged, she recorded the vocals. Although the first take was good, it didn’t fully capture her personal feel. After making adjustments and returning to the studio for a second session, the song finally came together in a way that felt authentic to her.

With this single, Sharon hopes listeners connect with the message of love, care, and effort. The song reflects the reality that when you love someone, you try your best to help them through difficult times, even though sometimes your best efforts may not be enough. Sharon Rae North continues to connect with audiences through live performances. She recently performed at Blues Alley in Washington, DC on January 7, and at Reveler in Richmond, Virginia on January 16. Upcoming shows include ICON Jazz Lounge in Columbus, Ohio on March 21 and St. James Live in Atlanta on April 12.
