Mike Di Lorenzo Brings Jazz, R&B, and Hip-Hop Together on New Single “Our Song”
Mike Di Lorenzo approaches music with an appreciation for diverse sounds, musical expression, and the freedom to explore beyond traditional genre boundaries. His latest single, “Our Song,” brings together contemporary jazz, R&B, and hip-hop influences, creating a melodic production shaped by rhythm, collaboration, and an unexpected moment of inspiration. Raised in West New York, New Jersey, just outside New York City, Di Lorenzo grew up surrounded by the cultural and musical diversity of the region. With Manhattan only a short drive away, his early environment offered exposure to a wide range of musical styles, from jazz and Latin music to soul.
These influences became part of his musical foundation and continue to inform his approach to composition. His musical journey began with classical piano lessons, although his personal listening interests extended into the sounds of Santana, Sly and The Family Stone, and Earth, Wind & Fire. The release of Herbie Hancock’s influential album Head Hunters introduced him to another dimension of jazz, leading to a deeper appreciation for artists such as Oscar Peterson. He also credits Quincy Jones as an important influence, particularly for his ability to connect jazz foundations with contemporary production, including his work with Michael Jackson.
With “Our Song,” Di Lorenzo set out to create a production that carried a hip-hop foundation while maintaining a strong melodic presence. Rather than beginning with the musical arrangement, he chose to build around a beat, experimenting with drum samples and chord progressions until the track began to take shape. One of the most unexpected moments in the creative process came courtesy of his cat, which jumped onto a keyboard and accidentally triggered a loop. What could have been a brief interruption became the defining spark for the production. Di Lorenzo used that unexpected sound as inspiration for the beat, allowing an unplanned moment to influence the direction of the record.
Once the instrumental was established, Di Lorenzo brought in Philadelphia singer and songwriter CaiNo to contribute the rap and lyrics. Anna Moore later joined the project, adding her soulful vocal expression to the composition. Both artists had previously collaborated with Di Lorenzo, making their involvement a continuation of an established creative relationship. The result is a track designed to capture a sense of happiness and warmth, carrying the relaxed energy of summer through its blend of rhythmic elements and melodic composition. “Our Song” reflects Di Lorenzo’s interest in allowing different musical traditions to coexist while giving each collaborator room to contribute an individual perspective. For Mike Di Lorenzo, the single is an expression of musical curiosity and the value of remaining open to inspiration, even when it arrives unexpectedly.
