For R&B artist Tony G Turner, music has always been about more than sound. It is an expression of personal experiences, musical curiosity, faith, and an appreciation for the details that make a song memorable. Born in Minden, Louisiana, raised in Shreveport, and shaped by a few formative childhood years in Dayton, Ohio, Turner developed his love for music in his aunt and uncle’s basement. That early environment became the starting point for a musical journey influenced by a wide range of genres, artists, and sounds. Turner’s primary musical home is R&B, although his catalog reaches well beyond traditional genre boundaries. Jazz influences, rock energy, pop, pop rock, inspirational music, and smooth jazz all have a place in his body of work. His childhood soundtrack included the Jackson 5, Johnnie Taylor, Hall & Oates, Chaka Khan, the Isley Brothers, Heatwave, the Bar-Kays, and Cameo. He was equally drawn to thoughtful songwriting and artists who knew how to communicate through lyrics. Bill Withers, Barry Manilow, Rod Temperton, and Billy Joel helped shape his appreciation for strong compositions, while the expressive vocals of Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, and Natalie Cole influenced his understanding of vocal performance.

As a teenager, Turner gravitated toward rock, spending time with the music of Kiss, Rush, Yes, and Styx. When Prince emerged, Turner became deeply interested in the Minneapolis sound and the musical direction coming from that scene. He also points to Mint Condition as a particularly important influence, describing the group as one of the greatest bands of all time and an example of the musicianship and sound he strives to bring into his own recordings.

That combination of influences is evident in his latest single, “I Love Your Ways,” a smooth jazz and R&B fusion built around a relaxed groove and a distinctive musical foundation. The track demonstrates Turner’s interest in blending instrumental detail with an accessible melody while giving the song room to communicate a meaningful message. The song's origins are especially interesting. Turner initially wrote the music as what he describes as a gospel interpretation of “Forget Me Nots,” Patrice Rushen’s celebrated recording. Inspired by Freddie Washington’s memorable bass work on the original, Turner decided to build his own arrangement around a prominent bass line. He recorded live bass before adding electric piano, horns, auxiliary keys, and drums through a Yamaha V50 workstation.

At the time, the composition carried the title “The Joke Is On You.” However, a creative disagreement between Turner and the original vocalist led them to separate professionally. They retained their respective contributions, with Turner keeping the music and the singer keeping the lyrics. Rather than abandoning the composition, he reconsidered its direction, eventually developing the smooth jazz version that became “I Love Your Ways.” For Turner, the circumstances surrounding the song's development carry a significance beyond the recording process itself. What began as a creative challenge became an opportunity to approach the music differently. He sees the finished song as a reflection of God's influence, particularly in the ways He moves, provides, arranges circumstances, and brings things together. In his view, the song would not exist in its current form without the inspiration that came from navigating that unexpected separation.

Another important element of the recording came together almost by accident. Turner’s sister, Phyllis Jackson, wanted to contribute vocals to one of his tracks, and the opportunity presented itself during the development of the song. Her performance was captured using an iPhone recording, which initially presented a technical challenge. Rather than treating the recording as a conventional lead vocal, Turner's engineer, OZ, suggested approaching it as a sample that could be triggered at the appropriate moments, almost like a DJ pressing a button. The idea worked. Jackson’s vocals were sampled and incorporated into the arrangement, giving the recording an additional layer without disrupting its instrumental flow. The solution became one of the song's defining creative moments, demonstrating how an unconventional recording method could serve the music. Turner acknowledges both Jackson and OZ for their contributions, as well as The Urban Influencer for providing the single with a platform.

Beyond its musical construction, “I Love Your Ways” carries a message that is central to Turner’s intentions. The title comes from an appreciation of how someone does what they do. It is not simply about recognizing an action or acknowledging a result. It is about noticing the character, grace, and intention revealed through the way something happens .That sentiment has a spiritual meaning for Turner. The song can be heard as an expression of gratitude toward God, recognizing the ways He provides, makes arrangements, and works through circumstances that may not initially make sense. This openness gives the song room for listeners to connect with it through their own experiences. Its smooth jazz pulse and R&B foundation create an inviting musical setting, while its message allows for both spiritual reflection and personal appreciation. Turner does not limit the meaning to one relationship or circumstance. Instead, he leaves space for listeners to decide who or what inspires that feeling.

For Turner, gratitude sometimes requires more than a simple thank you. Sometimes it means recognizing the beauty in the way something is done and expressing that appreciation directly. That thought sits at the center of “I Love Your Ways,” a recording that connects groove, personal reflection, and spiritual inspiration through a sound that is distinctly his own.
