New Orleans rapper, producer and talented lyricist Pell releases his music video for “throwback,” from his December released ‘girasoul’ EP via the Payday Records / PellYeah LLC.

The video pays sonic homage to “Slow Jamz” with Saba as Twista and Pell as Kanye. The song features a sample also used in John Legend’s “Another Again” from Legend's 2006 LP (Once Again) to emphasize the throwback vibes. The track also includes a feature from Chicago-native rapper and producer, Saba, who is one of the strategic features on the EP. Said to be “Chance the Rapper’s secret weapon” by Highsnobiety, Saba is best known for singing the hook on “Angels,” the lead single on Chance’s album Coloring Book, and a verse on “Everybody’s Something,” with heartfelt delivery in each lyric.

Directed by filmmaker duo Miles and AJ, who also brought Pell’s single “chirpin’” to life, “throwback” was shot on a Super 8 camera, allowing the trio to play creatively in a vintage light. Shot throughout Los Angeles, the illusionary theme preserves the idea of a stage set up and applied it to real life locations. The concept, furthermore, pursues an isolated day in the life for Pell. The video finds Pell waking up in his bedroom atop a mountain, followed by the bathroom on a side street, then moving to his living room in a parking lot, to his dinner table on the beach. where he goes about his day. You can see Pell in his living room on the street, at his dinner table on the beach, and other amiss moments.

“Shooting the video was dope because it was the first time I was shooting this quality of a video with bystanders walking by watching me do it,” said Pell. “You could say it was interactive in that way that most of my music videos aren't.”

Pell’s December girasoul EP served as a 6-track self-realized body of work. After completing his 2015 LIMBO EP, Pell pivoted his path and grew dedicated to evolving as an artist, teaching himself to play guitar and keyboard, and dabbling in music production. Some of his first production credits are as co-producer of girasoul. Pell’s also landed writing and production credits for film scores, including placements in La La Land and other upcoming film releases.
