Maurice Fonson on His New EP FUN, His Creative Journey and Seven Months in Brazil

Grammy-nominated, Billboard #1 songwriter, producer and recording artist Maurice Fonson is bringing his global, multi-genre artistry to the forefront with his forthcoming EP, FUN, arriving October 16, 2026.

Built from his years of songwriting and production experience, the five-track project explores R&B, pop, dance, club and international influences while giving listeners a deeper introduction to Fonson as an artist.

The project features “Nice Guy,” “Sweet,” “Fun,” “Love Me Later (Remix)” and “Know Better.”

“Fun” was written by Fonson and Marcel Sousa and produced by Sousa and Fonson, while “Sweet” was written by Fonson and Adien Lewis and produced by Hershell “KYO” Noah Perez Herrera, Fonson, Cael Dadian and Lorenzo Johnson.

The remaining songs were written by Fonson and Sousa and produced by Sousa and Fonson.

Fonson spent seven months in Brazil writing, producing and completing the project between Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles.

Q: Why did you call the EP FUN?

Maurice Fonson: The title really says it all. I wanted this project to be about having fun, being free and creating music that people can connect with. I did not want to put myself in a box. Spending seven months in Brazil gave me the time and space to really live in the music. I wrote, produced and completed the project there, and now I am excited to finally share it with the world.

Q: Tell us about the title track, “Fun.”

Maurice Fonson: “Fun” is really the heart of the project. I wrote it with Marcel Sousa, and Marcel and I produced it together. It represents the energy and freedom behind the entire EP. I wanted the title track to capture that feeling and set the tone for what people can expect from the project.

Q: What can listeners expect from the other songs on the EP?

Maurice Fonson: The EP has five tracks, “Nice Guy,” “Sweet,” “Fun,” “Love Me Later (Remix)” and “Know Better.” Marcel Sousa and I wrote “Nice Guy,” “Love Me Later (Remix)” and “Know Better,” and we also produced those songs together. Each record has its own personality, but they all fit into the world of FUN.

Q: Where does “Sweet” fit within the overall story of FUN?

Maurice Fonson: “Sweet” is the introduction. It is the first taste of this new chapter and gives people an idea of the energy and direction of the EP. It opens the door, and then the rest of the project takes you further into that world.

Q: Your career includes working across R&B, pop, Latin and other musical styles. How would you describe yourself creatively?

Maurice Fonson: I would describe myself as a global, multi-genre creator. R&B and pop are definitely important parts of who I am musically, but I have never wanted to be limited to one sound. I love bringing different influences together. My experiences with different artists, producers and cultures have allowed me to develop a sound that can move between genres while still feeling like me.

Q: Your credits include Madonna, Sebastián Yatra, Jennifer Hudson, Leona Lewis, Chante Moore and many other artists. How have those experiences shaped you?

Maurice Fonson: They have shaped me tremendously. Working with artists like Madonna, Sebastián Yatra, Jennifer Hudson, Leona Lewis, Chante Moore, Luke James, Cali Y El Dandee and Juan Magán has allowed me to see songwriting from so many different perspectives. I have also worked on projects like Chante Moore’s Moore Is More and Pau Garro’s debut full-length Latin album as a songwriter and co-producer. Those experiences have taught me to listen, adapt and always bring something authentic into the room.

Q: You spent seven months in Brazil creating FUN. What made that experience so important to the project?

Maurice Fonson: Brazil gave me the space to really focus. I spent seven months there writing, producing and completing the EP. Being in a different environment allowed me to experience things differently and let the music develop naturally. It became a major part of the journey behind the project.

Q: How did creating between Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles affect the sound?

Maurice Fonson: Those are two very different environments, and I think that contrast was creatively exciting. Los Angeles has always been an important part of my music career, while Rio gave me a different energy and perspective. Bringing those experiences together helped shape the project into something that feels global.

Q: What does stepping out from behind the scenes mean to you?

Maurice Fonson: It means allowing people to see another side of me. I have spent years helping create music for other artists, and I am proud of that work. Now I am putting my own voice, personality and experiences into the music. It is an exciting new chapter.

Q: What do you hope listeners take away from FUN?

Maurice Fonson: I want people to have a good time with it. I want them to dance, sing along, feel something and maybe forget about whatever is going on for a few minutes. Music can create that kind of escape. For me, FUN is about freedom, creativity and enjoying the moment.

Q: What is next after FUN?

Maurice Fonson: I want to keep creating. “Sweet” is out now, “Fun” arrives October 16, and the full FUN EP arrives the same day.

This is just the beginning of this chapter. I have spent a lot of time creating behind the scenes, and now I am ready to continue building my own artistic journey.
