Malik Oliver Talks About The Fight: Live in Dallas, The Fight Prayer Journal, Being a Creative and Living a Life of Faith
Life’s battles can test faith, challenge perspective and leave people searching for strength and direction.
For gospel artist, worship leader and creative Malik Oliver, those experiences have become the foundation for two deeply personal projects, The Fight: Live in Dallas and The Fight Prayer Journal.
Through live gospel music, worship and guided reflection, Oliver encourages others to face their struggles honestly, draw closer to God and recognize that difficult seasons do not define the end of their story.
In this exclusive interview, Oliver discusses the inspiration behind his new live album, the purpose of his prayer journal, his journey as a creative and the faith that continues to guide his work.
Q: Your new live album, The Fight: Live in Dallas, is out now. What inspired you to create this project?
Malik Oliver: The Fight: Live in Dallas is one of the most personal projects I’ve ever released. Every song represents a different part of the fight, including faith, pressure, perseverance, worship and ultimately victory. I wanted to create something honest that people could connect with, especially those going through difficult seasons. Life does not always go the way we expect, but I believe we can still worship while we are fighting. I want people to know that their current circumstances do not have to define their story.
Q: The title The Fight speaks to something everyone can relate to. What does fighting through life mean to you personally?
Malik Oliver: Life comes with battles, some that people see and others that we fight in silence. For me, the fight is about learning to trust God even when I do not have all the answers. It is about continuing to believe when things are difficult and understanding that faith does not mean you will never experience challenges. Sometimes, the greatest growth happens in the seasons when you have to depend on God the most.
Q: What do you hope listeners take away from The Fight: Live in Dallas?
Malik Oliver: I want listeners to recognize pieces of their own stories in the music. Maybe they are dealing with disappointment, uncertainty, personal struggles or a season that has tested their faith. I want them to know they are not alone. More importantly, I want them to walk away understanding that the fight is not the end of their story. There are still new beginnings on the other side.
Q: “Everything I Need,” featuring Crystal Aikin, is a key song on the album. What makes this collaboration special to you?
Malik Oliver: “Everything I Need” is really the heartbeat of The Fight: Live in Dallas. The song is about continuing to believe, worship and fight through seasons that challenge your faith. It is my declaration that even in those moments, God has never left me lacking. Having Crystal Aikin join me on this record made that declaration even more special. When life changes, people change and circumstances change, God remains enough. That is the message I want people to carry with them.
Q: Along with the live album, you created The Fight Prayer Journal. What inspired you to extend the message beyond music?
Malik Oliver: The Fight Prayer Journal came from my own experiences of navigating battles, building faith and learning to trust God through different seasons. I wanted to create something that could help people process what they are going through and make room for honest conversations with God. Music can encourage you, but journaling and prayer also give you an opportunity to slow down, reflect and work through what you are experiencing. The journal is an extension of the message behind the album and a way to help people walk through their own fight with God.
Q: How is The Fight Prayer Journal designed to help someone who is going through a difficult season?
Malik Oliver: The journal is your space to reflect, release and recognize God's hand in your fight. You can move through each page at your own pace. Be honest. Be open. Be real. You do not have to pretend that everything is okay or have all the answers. The goal is to create space for reflection, prayer and a deeper relationship with God as you navigate whatever season you are in.
Q: The message behind the journal encourages people to “Fight in Prayer. Win in Faith.” What does that mean to you?
Malik Oliver: It means that even when you cannot control everything happening around you, you can still choose to turn to God in prayer and stand on your faith. Prayer helps you bring your concerns, fears and hopes to God. Faith helps you keep moving forward, even when you cannot see how everything will work out. Winning does not always mean getting the outcome you expected. Sometimes, it means finding the strength to keep going, trusting God and allowing yourself to grow through the process. You already have everything you need to win.
Q: You describe yourself as a creative. What does being a creative mean to you beyond making music?
Malik Oliver: Being a creative means using the gifts God has given me to communicate, inspire and connect with people. Music is one expression of that, but creativity can also show up through writing, ministry, reflection and the ideas we bring to life. Creating The Fight Prayer Journal allowed me to share the message in another way. For me, it is about being intentional with what I create and making sure there is a meaningful message behind it.
Q: How do you balance being an artist, a worship leader and a creative while navigating your own personal life?
Malik Oliver: I am still learning, just like everyone else. Being in ministry or creating music does not mean you have everything figured out. You still experience life, face challenges and have moments when you need encouragement yourself. My faith reminds me to make room for God in every season and to be honest about where I am. I believe there is value in allowing yourself to grow while continuing to serve others through your gifts.
Q: You have said, “You’re still here, and that means God isn’t finished.” Why is that message important to you?
Malik Oliver: It means your story is still being written. You may have experienced things that hurt you, disappointed you or made you question what comes next, but you are still here. There is still room for growth, healing, purpose and new beginnings. I want people to stop looking at their current struggles as proof that their story is over. God can still work through what you are experiencing, and there is hope beyond what you can see right now. That message is at the heart of both the live album and the prayer journal.
Q: What does success look like to you at this point in your journey?
Malik Oliver: Success is about more than numbers or recognition. Those things can be encouraging, but what matters most to me is knowing that the music and the work I create are making a difference. If someone hears a song and finds the strength to keep going, if someone begins praying again, or if the journal helps someone draw closer to God, that matters. I want to be faithful to what I have been called to do and continue growing as an artist and a person.
Q: What is next for you, and how can people experience your music and get their copy of The Fight Prayer Journal?
Malik Oliver: I am excited for people to experience The Fight: Live in Dallas and connect with the message behind the music. I also want people to discover The Fight Prayer Journal and use it as a resource for their own prayer and reflection. Both projects come from a desire to encourage people through life's challenges and remind them that they do not have to face their battles alone.
