Today (Oct. 20) is National Day on Writing, and Jhene Aiko has launched a nationwide campaign dubbed #PennysPen that brings awareness to the power of the written word. "Penny" is in reference to Aiko's alter ego "Penny."

The campaign will span a week and is a collaborative effort with Get Schooled, a nonprofit organization that aims to improve high school graduation rates as well as promotes higher education.

Jhene posted a video on social media where she spoke about the importance of self-expression through writing and how it has personally helped her. Being a songwriter, Aiko promotes journaling as a form of therapy. The campaign encourages children and young adults between ages 13-21 to share their writing pieces on social media using the hashtags #GetSchooled and #PennysPen, or by uploading their work on Get Schooled’s website. Top entries will get the chance to win a custom-designed notebook and pen set.

"There are days when we struggle and life seems hard, but it always helps when we can express ourselves. And when it seems like no one else understands, our journals can be our best friends," Jhene said. "Writing poetry has always been a form of therapy for me. It helps me reflect and get through difficult situations."
