Hip-hop artist, singer, songwriter, and storyteller DJ Stussy is creating a powerful lane for himself by blending rap, singing, storytelling, social commentary, and the spiritual foundation that first introduced him to music.

Long before hip-hop became an important part of his artistic expression, DJ Stussy’s musical journey was shaped by his gospel roots and upbringing in the church.

He began playing drums at a young age, developing an early understanding of rhythm, emotion, discipline, and the power music has to move people.

Those formative experiences continue to influence the way he approaches music today.

For DJ Stussy, gospel is more than a musical influence.

It helped establish the foundation for how he understands storytelling, emotion, perseverance, hope, and connection.

That foundation can be heard in the heart and intention behind his music, even as he moves between hip-hop, R&B, singing, and socially conscious records.

From his South Central Los Angeles roots to his gospel-influenced musical foundation, DJ Stussy’s story is one of creativity, growth, faith, authenticity, and purpose.

His music reflects the experiences that shaped him while encouraging listeners to think about their own journeys.

Watch DJ Stussy’s powerful single “BLACKER,” a compelling expression of identity, pride, resilience, and purpose that invites listeners to celebrate Black culture, history, and self-expression.

Through his music, DJ Stussy is not simply sharing his story. He is bringing audiences along as he explores identity, community, faith, culture, perseverance, and the experiences that shape who we become.

Through songs such as “The Struggle of a Black Man,” his album “A Kid From South Central,” visual storytelling, and community-focused projects such as “The Overnight Show,” DJ Stussy continues to demonstrate that music can entertain while also encouraging reflection, inspiration, awareness, and meaningful conversation.

Q: Tell us about DJ Stussy. Who is the artist behind the music?

DJ Stussy: I’m an artist, songwriter, rapper, and singer. My music is a reflection of my experiences, my upbringing, my faith, and the culture that shaped me. I use music as a way to tell stories, express emotions, and connect with people. My goal is to create songs that entertain, but also make people think, feel, and hopefully leave them with something positive.

Q: Your musical journey has gospel roots. Tell us about your early connection to gospel music and the church.

DJ Stussy: My musical foundation started in church. I began playing drums at a young age, and that experience introduced me to the power of music and emotion. Being in that environment taught me how music can touch people, bring people together, and communicate something that words alone sometimes cannot. Gospel gave me an appreciation for passion, storytelling, rhythm, and connecting with people on a deeper level.

Q: How does your faith continue to influence you as an artist?

DJ Stussy: Faith is part of who I am, so naturally it becomes part of my music. It influences the way I see life, how I deal with challenges, and how I tell my stories. Even when I’m talking about difficult subjects, I believe there can still be a message of hope, strength, perseverance, and purpose. My faith reminds me that what I do can have an impact beyond entertainment.

Q: Gospel music often carries messages of hope, perseverance, testimony, and overcoming adversity. Do those themes show up in your hip-hop?

DJ Stussy: Absolutely. Gospel taught me that a story can come from struggle and still lead somewhere positive. Life isn’t always easy, and I want my music to be honest about that. But I also believe in overcoming, learning, growing, and continuing to move forward. Those themes are important to me whether I’m rapping, singing, or telling a story through a visual.

Q: Your hit song “BLACKER” has resonated with many listeners. What inspired the record?

DJ Stussy: “BLACKER” came from a place of pride, identity, and reflection. I wanted to create something that celebrated Black culture, history, and the strength of our community. The song is about embracing who we are and recognizing the beauty, resilience, and power in our stories.

Q: The title “BLACKER” is a powerful statement. What message do you want listeners to take away from the song?

DJ Stussy: I want people to feel empowered. I want listeners to hear the song and think about their own journey, their own identity, and the things that make them unique. It’s about celebrating ourselves while understanding the history and experiences that brought us here.

Q: You are known for blending hip-hop with social commentary. Why is it important for you to use your music as a platform?

DJ Stussy: Music has always been a way to communicate what people are feeling. Hip-hop has a long history of telling stories and speaking about real-life experiences. I believe artists have a responsibility to use their voices to inspire conversations and bring awareness to things that matter.

Q: Your song “The Struggle of a Black Man” addresses racial injustice. What made you want to tackle that subject?

DJ Stussy: That song comes from seeing and understanding the struggles that many Black men face. It was important for me to tell that story honestly and create something that allows people to reflect on those experiences. Music can be a powerful tool for awareness and understanding.

Q: Your music incorporates both rap and singing. How does singing complement your rap style?

DJ Stussy: Singing allows me to express a different side of myself. Sometimes a message needs to be delivered through melody and emotion, while other times it needs the energy and directness of rap. Being able to do both gives me more ways to tell a story. My gospel background also helped me understand the emotional power of vocals and harmonies.

Q: Your project “A Kid From South Central” reflects your roots. How has South Central Los Angeles influenced your music?

DJ Stussy: South Central is a part of who I am. The people, the culture, the experiences, and the history all shaped my perspective. My music reflects where I come from and the stories of the community that helped shape me.

Q: You released visuals for “Fortune Cookie” featuring Ace The Rapper from “A Kid From South Central.” What was the inspiration behind bringing that song to life visually?

DJ Stussy: Visuals are another way to bring the music to life. I wanted people to experience the story behind the song and see the world I’m creating through my music. Storytelling doesn’t have to stop with the audio. I want people to see and feel the message as well.

Q: How do you balance your gospel foundation with the realities and language of hip-hop?

DJ Stussy: I don’t see them as being disconnected. My gospel foundation is part of me, and hip-hop is another part of my expression. Gospel taught me about truth, emotion, testimony, perseverance, and connecting with people. Hip-hop gave me another language to express those experiences. I’m able to bring both sides of myself into the music.

Q: Do you consider your music inspirational even when you are addressing difficult or serious topics?

DJ Stussy: Yes. Inspiration doesn’t always mean everything has to sound happy or perfect. Sometimes inspiration comes from telling the truth about what someone has survived. If someone hears one of my songs and feels understood, encouraged, empowered, or motivated to keep going, then I believe the music has served a purpose.

Q: Beyond music, you are involved in community-focused projects like “The Overnight Show.” Why is community important to you?

DJ Stussy: Community is everything. Music is about connection, and I want to create spaces where people can share ideas, celebrate creativity, and have meaningful conversations. I believe we have to support each other and create opportunities for people to be heard.

Q: You have appeared on The Hussle Report podcast supporting Black art. Why is it important to support other creatives?

DJ Stussy: Black art has always been powerful and influential. Supporting artists and creators helps keep our stories alive and allows more voices to be heard. I believe when one person succeeds, it can open the door for someone else.

Q: What role does hope play in your music?

DJ Stussy: Hope is important because everybody goes through something. I want people to know that whatever they’re facing doesn’t have to define the rest of their story. There is always room to grow, overcome, and become something greater. That’s something I learned through my upbringing, my faith, and my experiences.

Q: What can fans expect from DJ Stussy moving forward?

DJ Stussy: Fans can expect more music, more storytelling, and more opportunities to connect with me. I’m continuing to grow as an artist and share my journey. I want people to feel like they are a part of it.

Q: What do you hope your legacy will be?

DJ Stussy: I want my legacy to be about impact. I want people to remember that I used my voice, my music, and my platform to tell meaningful stories and inspire others. I want the music to mean something and hopefully encourage somebody else to keep going, believe in themselves, and understand that their story matters.

As DJ Stussy continues to evolve as an artist, he remains committed to creating music that reflects his journey while giving a voice to stories that deserve to be heard.

His gospel foundation remains an important part of that journey.

The lessons he absorbed through church and his early experience playing drums helped shape his understanding of music as more than entertainment.

For DJ Stussy, music can communicate testimony, emotion, struggle, hope, identity, and perseverance.

That perspective allows him to move naturally between hip-hop and singing while maintaining an authentic connection to the experiences that shaped him.

His unique blend of rap, vocals, social awareness, gospel influence, and storytelling continues to connect with audiences who see themselves reflected in his music.

With “BLACKER” and future projects on the horizon, DJ Stussy is not only sharing his artistry. He is bringing listeners along for the journey, using his voice to celebrate culture, inspire conversations, acknowledge life's challenges, and create music with purpose.
